Shearwater Insurance have recently established an exciting new partnership with the Animal Health Trust (AHT) to join in the campaign to eliminate the problem of Strangles in horses.

In February 2007 the AHT - partnered with the British Horse Society (BHS) - began a nationwide operation to raise public awareness and help fund research to eradicate the increasing problem of this extremely debilitating disease. The consequences to yards and equine centres can be economically disastrous as well as, on occasion, proving fatal for badly affected horses.

Launched by the Princess Royal, the scientists at the AHT expect to significantly reduce this welfare problem through a number of methods, including the development of a new blood test capable of identifying long-term carriers, as well as creating a safe and effective vaccine.

Jeremy Lawton of Shearwater Insurance understands the vital role this Strangles campaign plays in the equestrian industry and is very pleased to be involved. “The welfare of our horses is at the forefront of all our minds, I am very happy to be able to assist in helping to eliminate this increasingly problematic disease.

” From August 1st, every equine policy sent out by Shearwater will offer customers the opportunity to donate £1 to the AHT’s fight against Strangles. As well as this, Shearwater promise to donate £5 for every £250 spent on all new policies secured through the partnership. Andrew Simmonds from the AHT says, “Our thanks go to Shearwater for offering the public this simple and practical way to support the Strangles Appeal. When you next need insurance, think of Shearwater and how you can make a difference to equine welfare.”
