The Hawtins Stud have a fantastic history with the Shearwater Young Horse Classes, qualifying a selection of horses over the years and fielding winners as well. This year they have two horses qualified for the final four-year-old Hawtins Lirica and four-year-old Hawtins Fianello.
Can you tell me a little bit about your horse?
We have two horses qualified for the four year old young horse championships this year.
Hawtins Lirica is a four year old by Lemony’s Nicket out of Elite Hawtins Delizia by Dimaggio\Brentano II. She is ridden by Lucinda Elliott. Hawtins Lirica was a very close second in the semi-finals at Hartpury this year. She is a delightful person with a great engine and she loves to work.
Hawtins Fianello is a four year old By Floriscount out of Hawtins Cardinal Virtue by Cardinar\Werther. He is ridden by Bryony Goodwin. Hawtins Fianello qualified for the four year old semi-finals on his first outing and was third in the semi-finals at Port Royal. He is a lovely character and is very trainable.
Is this your first time in the Shearwater Young Horse qualifiers?
As breeders and producers of young horses our horses take part in the Shearwater young horse qualifiers every year. We have been fortunate that our horses have won the four year old championship twice and also the five year old championship in recent years.
What will you be doing to prepare for the finals of the Shearwater Young Horse classes?
We like our four year olds to take part in the Shearwater young horse classes as it gives them an opportunity to gain experience of travelling and competing but without any pressure. They are not competed any other classes. All our four year olds then have a good holiday over the summer. The horses that will be going to the championships at the Nationals will start back in light work, including hacking, in the middle of August. Our four year olds will be greener compared to others but we accept that as we are looking to the long-term.
Aside from the finals what other ambitions do you have for your horse this season and beyond?
We breed and produce our horses for a long term career in dressage, so we do not have any other plans to compete them for the rest of the year. Our four year olds will continue their training through this Winter. Next year we hope Hawtins Fianello and Hawtins Lirica will qualify for the five year old championships and the novice gold and then progress on from there. As are most of our horses, they are for sale so we hope they will continue on from their great start in life.
What in particular do you like about the Shearwater Young Horse Finals?
It is a great opportunity for everyone to see some of the best young horses in the country. It is also a fantastic showcase for British breeding as many of the top horses these days are British-bred. It is a great experience for the young horses.
